This 13-week practical and theoretical course draws on work from human literacy, cognitive science and communication theory to inform practical work. Areas of application include visual communication, wayfinding, online education, instructions, forms and infographics. Students are encouraged to cross modalities, such as designing for audio (uses of verbal information and sounds, such as earcons), even though the overwhelming amount of information surrounding us (as much as 93%) is delivered in visual form.
Student projects are real-life projects for the local community and visitors to the island, such as a campaign for keeping local beaches clear of cigarette debris, promoting recycling and responsible water use on the island, and navigating Syros in space and time. Leaflets and infographics designed by the students have ranged from physical documents to TV and radio spots, from interactive digital signage to 3D virtual environments; they have been used to promote academic work at trade fairs, and taken up by manufacturers and national authorities.
In late summer 2013, Syros was the co-organiser and host for the Information Design Summer School in partnership with the Simplification Centre, London, UK and the International Institute for Information Design (IIID).
